David Hill, FAIA

Bio

David Hill, FAIA, is a Professor of Architecture and Co-Founder of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab at the College of Design where he has taught full-time since 2007. While at NC State, David has led graduate and undergraduate design studios, digital representation courses, and seminars that focus on integrative digital simulation processes, architectural prototypes, and design strategies for coastal regions.

David is pursuing his interests in coastal dynamics, prototypes, and simulation through a series of trans-disciplinary research and design projects with the College of Engineering, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Landscape Architecture, and the UNC Coastal Studies Institute. He has presented papers and design projects related to his research at numerous ACSA, EDRA, and CELA conferences. He has received grants and won several awards for his design work, research, and teaching, including the AIA/ACSA Decade of Design Grant (2014), the ACSA Faculty Design Award (2009), the ACSA Housing Design Education Award (2013), an NCSU Strategic Research Initiatives Grant (2010), and the NCSU Libraries Faculty Award (2014). His entry—with Laura Garofalo and Nelson Tang—was a winner in the NYC OEM-sponsored “What if New York City…” post-disaster housing international design competition. More recently, David has designed award-winning projects and competition entries in collaboration with Tonic Design and In Situ Studio in Raleigh.

Prior to joining the Architecture Faculty, David worked for Hashim Sarkis Studios in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee Architecture (PBC+L) in Raleigh, North Carolina. Several of his projects at PBC+L—including academic buildings and bus shelters for Wake Technical Community College, entry signage for RDU International Airport, and classroom buildings on NC State’s campus—have won various levels of AIA design awards.

David taught studios at the Boston Architectural College, Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s Career Discovery Program, and design studios as an adjunct professor at NC State before joining the faculty full-time. He has served on awards juries for the Boston Society of Architects, AIA South Carolina and Georgia, and as a guest juror at the University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Texas – Austin, Tulane University, and UNC-Charlotte. He recently participated in the Visiting Teacher Programme at the Architectural Association in London.

David holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture from NC State University, and he earned a Masters in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University where was awarded the Faculty of Architecture Design Award.
