Our approach to the project began with collaging, utilizing research of Atlanta and the site to drive the form of the collage. Through weaving of the urbanscape (white string) into the landscape (layered images of nature), playful dialogues were expressed; creating opportunities for the program to emerge from and burrow into the land and structure. Through this process, new discoveries and design languages were revealed, further influencing design proposals. The structure of the building is composed of a heavy timber post and beam system with two vertical heavy timber cores, and horizontal double-spanning CLT floor panels with concrete floor toppings to reinforce the overall structural integrity of the building. The heavy timber structural skeleton is encased in a freely formed bore-crete and epoxy-coated rebar reinforcement shell. Bore-crete is a cast-in-place concrete that utilizes wood ash waste product left behind by the emerald ash borer beetle as a concrete aggregate. The experience of the building resembles the burrowed nests carved within the ash trees by the borer beetles, an invasive species responsible for killing hundreds of millions of ash trees in North America. Bore-crete provides an innovative proposal for decreasing carbon emissions and creating a material capable of future decomposition. The building is protected by a cocoon-like frosted glass curtain wall system. The east and west facades are treated with spandrel glass in order to reduce solar gain, while the openness of the north and south facades allow sunlight to illuminate the carved interior.
