DesignSprint 2019 | The Landscape of Climate Change

March 20 – 23, 2019

Sponsored by NC State Design, Department of Landscape Architecture

The Department of Landscape Architecture invites students to join us for a four (4) day “ideas” charette focused on design strategies to address climate change.

Design thinking can play a key role in building strategies to address the issues brought on by climate change, such as sea level rise, severe storms, flooding, fires, and drought. The nature of these issues demands a diversity of views and multidisciplinary approaches in order to develop innovative solutions that can strengthen communities’ resilience. Although it is a short time frame, DesignSprint offers a dedicated forum for exploring the possibilities of fun, intensive, and collaborative work in service to designing solutions to one of the grand challenges of our time.

Building from the success of two previous DesignWeek events (links available here), this intensive experience will bring together student teams from diverse disciplines to pursue innovative design responses to climate change. These responses could range from places and structures to systems and products, and anything in between.

DesignSprint results will be judged by a jury made up of multidisciplinary faculty and regional climate scholars and the winners will receive a monetary award and media coverage by the College of Design.

DesignSprint will be an immersive and intensive event requiring full participation of students for the four day duration. All participants will be provided access to an extensive background reading and resource list. After an introductory lecture by a well-known expert and the assignment of student teams, participants will work collaboratively with daily goals and outcomes in consultation with faculty and multi-disciplinary scholars. From framing the problem(s) to brainstorming design alternatives, to selecting and presenting the final proposals to the jury, student teams will be evaluated for their process, as well as their final results.

** DesignSprint is a required event for all LAR studio course

** DesignSprint is available as a one-credit hour elective course for everyone else (LAR 582 – 004).

** The winning student teams will receive cash prizes ($750-first prize; $500-second prize; and $250-third prize).
