Bio

My name is Hwaseong Lee, and I am a citizen of South Korea. I am intensely interested in observing people’s behaviors and integrating their needs into architectural spaces. My doctoral research explores the spatial design elements that promote physical activity (PA) in children aged 6-9 in Montessori schools. My research examines how Montessori schools’ unique indoor and outdoor spaces, guided by Montessori educational philosophy, enhance children’s physical activity. By analyzing these design elements, I aim to contribute practical insights into creating environments that encourage healthy and active lifestyles for children.

Previously, during my master’s studies, I researched the transformation of spatial planning by studying user behaviors in public libraries in Korea. This experience laid the foundation for my current focus and inspired me to pursue broader and more in-depth research during my doctoral studies.

I am also a member of the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), where I collaborate on projects to enhance children’s physical activity through the thoughtful design of childcare centers. This work aligns closely with my academic interests and allows me to contribute to real-world applications that improve children’s health, growth, learning, and play.
