Farzaneh Oghazian is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Her research explores the intersection of computational design, material behavior, digital fabrication, and lightweight structures, with a particular focus on textiles and bio-based materials in architecture. Her work investigates how material behavior can become an active part of the design process through computational form-finding, simulation, machine learning, physical modeling, and digital fabrication.
Her research explores knitted textiles as architectural systems and as frameworks for developing new composite and bio-based materials. Her collaborative work includes MycoKnit, a project exploring knitted textiles and mycelium-based composites for large-scale biodegradable architectural structures, which received the 2021 SOM Foundation Research Prize. She has also collaborated on Flower Antenna, a knitted textile installation that explores computational textiles, sound, and transmission, exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art as part of Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America.
Her teaching connects computational thinking, structures, and hands-on making. She emphasizes learning through making and encourages students to explore the relationship between material, geometry, structure, and fabrication through physical and digital experimentation.
She holds a Ph.D. in Design Computing in Architecture from The Pennsylvania State University, an M.Arch. from Tarbiat Modares University, and a B.Arch. from the University of Tehran, Iran.
