Alumnus Heath Satow’s “Dream of Flight” Sculpture moves from RDU to Global Courtyard

In summer 2018, sculptor and NC State College of Design alumnus Heath Satow (BEDA, ’91) posted a call for help on Facebook. He had just moved from Los Angeles to Ogden, Utah, when he was contacted by the RDU Airport Authority, saying that his Dream of Flight sculpture (his first large-scale public sculpture commission in 2004) had to be removed from the general aviation terminal. Over two thousand miles away, Satow was hoping that a friend in Raleigh would come to his aid.

Exploring Solutions, By Design

Barrie’s studio class, Affordable and Supportive Housing for NC State, explored possible solutions to student housing insecurity. The concept connected with the results of a 2017 research study by the NC State Food and Housing Security Initiative, co-chaired by psychology professor Mary Haskett and Sarah Wright, TRIO academic coach at the university, which found that almost 10 percent of NC State students had experienced homelessness within a 30-day period.

Since Mary Haskett’s 2017 study illustrated the need to address food and housing insecurity faced by NC State students, campus and community partners have worked on ways to respond. Grants from the NC State University Foundation are supporting development of a Host Homes Program, which will match students facing homelessness or housing insecurity with members of the community willing to open their homes. At the same time, an interdisciplinary partnership with Professor Tom Barrie in the College of Design is exploring what it might look like to provide housing on or near campus.

Professors Carolina Gill and Kelly Umstead from the Industrial Design program at NC State are partnering with Alison Stuebe, MD, MSc from the UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kristin Tully, PhD from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and Emily Patterson, PhD of The Ohio State University’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
