A 2" MDF slab can cost $200 a sheet and isn’t something you’ll find at your typical hardware store.
Thanks to in-kind donations from Oak City Customs (@oakcitycustoms) and Design Dimension (@designdimensioninc), our students don’t have to glue up boards just to get the thickness they need for a model, or skip a concept because the material is out of reach.
From specialty plywoods and MDF to acrylic, PVC, metal and more, students now have access to these industry-grade materials to create and build with at the Materials lab
Access changes everything. And we’re grateful for partners who make that access possible.

NC State Industrial Design Assistant Professor Byungsoo Kim explores how students experience authorship and creative ownership in AI-assisted design, and why those perceptions matter as AI becomes part of everyday creative practice.

Built from ambition, collaboration and a whole lot of mass timber.
Designed and constructed by NC State architecture students, Floating Grove is the university’s first mass-timber pavilion and the latest project from the School of Architecture’s Design + Build program. From material research to full-scale construction, the pavilion reflects what’s possible when students are trusted to design, build and leave something lasting behind.
