The Napkin Sketch Auction will Support an Amazing Cause
The Napkin Sketch Auction is a fundraising effort by Freedom by Design (FBD), which is the student-led community service branch of AIAS. This online auction will help support their current project that includes a retrofit of a backyard patio at Life Experiences, Inc., a company that employees people with disabilities and allows them the opportunity to earn wages. Through various donations and support, FBD has worked with faculty, alumni, and friends of the College of Design to develop a collection of sketches that are available for bidding. All proceeds will go towards the development and construction of Life Experience project.

Below is a description of the available napkin drawings including the artist name.
(1) Turan Duda | [B.Arch. 76] | “Cox Rotunda” (Atlanta, Georgia)
Turan Duda of Duda+Paine Architects in Durham, North Carolina sketches and provides write up of the Cox Rotunda and its unifying qualities in Atlanta, Georgia. Sketch is reprinted on 8 ½ x 11 arches with multi-paragraph write up (Reprint from 2012)
(2) David Hill, Interim Department Head of School of Architecture | “Roof of Raleigh”
David Hill collects a series of 5 iconic roof sketches in the Raleigh area including the North Carolina Legislative Building, Memorial Auditorium, Dorton Arena, North Carolina State Capitol and the Catalano House. Sketches are ink drawn on 4” x 8” napkins
(3) Thomas Barrie, AIA | Professor of Architecture, Director of Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities initiative | “Backyard Cottage”
Tom Barrie sketches and paints a series of drawings explaining a 250 square foot backyard cottage. Sketch is drawn in pencil and rendered in watercolor on 8 ½ x 11 quality paper
(4) Don Kranbuehl, AIA | Professor of the Practice in Architecture | “Section Sketch”
Don Kranbuehl sketches a section of a building designed by his firm Clark Nexsen. Sketch is penciled on trace papers roughly 12″ x 9″
(5) Matthew Griffith | [B.Arch. 02] + Adjunct Faculty in Architecture | “Raleigh House”
Matt sketched a house his firm, In Situ Studio has designed in Raleigh. Sketch is digital format only
(6) Dennis Stallings, FAIA | [B.Arch. 84, M.Arch 88] + Professor of the Practice in Architecture | “NCSU Bell Tower”
Dennis has drawn the classic Raleigh icon, the Bell Tower located on North Carolina State University’s campus. Sketch is ink on 4” x 4” napkin
(7) Dennis Stallings, FAIA | [B.Arch. 84, M.Arch 88] + Professor of the Practice in Architecture | “Hunt Library”
Dennis of Clark, Nexsen, has sketched the Hunt Library, a project on North Carolina State University’s campus. Both sketches are ink on 4” x 4” napkins
(8) Dennis Stallings, FAIA | [B.Arch. 84, M.Arch 88] + Professor of the Practice in Architecture | “Engineering Oval”
Dennis of Clark, Nexsen, has sketched the Engineering Oval, a building to be added to North Carolina State University’s campus in the following years. Both sketches are ink on 4” x 4” napkins
(9) Patricia Morgado, PhD | Associate Professor of Architecture | “Predra de los 12 angulos – Cuzco”
Patricia has drawn a beautiful streetscape from Cuzco, Peru. Pencil sketch on 5 x 6″ quality paper
(10) Patrick Rand, FAIA, DPACSA | Distinguished Professor of Architecture | Extreme Event Protection
Pat Rand has created a detail for extreme event protection as seen in his book “Architectural Detailing; Function, Constructibility, Aesthetics”, 3rd edition. 2016. He has also provided the “working” pages containing original thoughts and notes as he edited this book for this detail. The drawings are ink on 8 ½ x 11 inch mylar, the notes are hard written on 11 x 17 prints.
(11) Patrick Rand, FAIA, DPACSA | Distinguished Professor of Architecture | Hierarchy of Refinement
Pat has created a detail for representing hierarchy of refinement as seen in his book “Architectural Detailing; Function, Constructibility, Aesthetics” 2nd edition, 2007. He has also provided the “working” pages containing original thoughts and notes as he edited this book for this detail. The drawings are ink on 8 ½ x 11 inch mylar, the notes are hard written on 11 x 17 prints.
(12) George Smart | [B.Arch. 59] | Quote
George Smart, of North Carolina Modernist Houses (http://www.ncmodernist.org/index.html) has written a quick note about modern homes. Note is written on an 8 x 8 inch napkin.
