The AIAS Honor Awards were developed to publicly recognize outstanding achievements by students, educators, and practitioners who have exhibited an exemplary commitment to the education and development of architecture students. This public recognition is the highest honor the organization can bestow.

The AIAS Outstanding Learning and Teaching Culture Award is awarded jointly to a chapter of The American Institute of Architecture Students and school administration who prioritizes, cultivates, and demonstrates a commitment to healthy Learning and Teaching
cultures, health and wellbeing, and fair labor practices.

    Widely recognized as a builder of leaders and a champion of emerging professionals, Matthew Szymanski, AIA, creates transformative opportunities that bridge education, practice, and community engagement. Through his leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, he is shaping a profession where young architects can lead, innovate, and thrive.

    Matthew Szymanski is a 2003 graduate of the master of architecture program.

    Community Impact through Design Award

    Winner: 2019 Summer Design + Build Program: Freedom River Mobile History Museum

    Inspired by the legacy of community-driven work by both Phil Freelon and Steve Schuster, the Community Impact Through Design Award seeks to recognize built architectural projects that have catalyzed, reimagined and advanced communities in the United States for the purpose of serving the general public. This award celebrates architecture whose design is framed by servitude and results in a project that is considered an invaluable community resource.
