WHAT DESIGN CAMP IS

Design Camp is an annual series of pre-college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students who are interested in design. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of design in all aspects of our everyday lives. The skills in design thinking and creative experience gained at Design Camp can empower students on their path toward becoming innovative problem solvers and prepare them to tackle the challenges of the future.

Design Camp includes experiences in a range of different design disciplines. If you are interested in a discipline-specific program, please check out our Summer Studios.

WHAT DESIGN CAMP DOES

At Design Camp, we welcome campers into college design studio spaces to learn how design knowledge and skills can help them understand the world around them and do what it takes to make it better. Design Camp projects challenge students to explore their creativity and critical-thinking skills while pushing them to try a range of techniques and media. The exploration of the design process teaches students to question, make choices, generate alternatives, work collaboratively and create their own solutions to problems. Learning about design as a way of thinking helps students apply skills in math, science, technology, reading, writing, and communication. Students who attend Design Camp make connections between what they know and can do and ultimately broaden their awareness, understanding and navigation of the world around them.

WHO SHOULD COME TO DESIGN CAMP

  • Students eager to learn more about design in a college environment
  • Beginners interested in developing skills and creativity through hands-on experiences
  • Rising 7th-12th graders wanting to meet other creative students their age who are interested in art and design
  • Students who are curious about the world around them and have ideas for how to make it better

DESIGN CAMP HISTORY & NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Having operated for over a quarter of a century, the Design Camp at NC State's College of Design has provided the spark and fuel of inspiration for thousands of aspiring designers, including some who have gone on to national and international success in their field. It has grown and changed since its inception in 1985 as a design outreach program for high school students in rural North Carolinian communities. In the last 20 years, Design Camp has taken place on campus at the College of Design. It is here that campers have had the opportunity to explore design broadly, with a rigorous schedule and challenging projects in a college studio environment that provides a truly immersive experience.  We have structured our offerings to provide logical pathways for students to advance through our programs, while keeping options flexible to accommodate a wide range of interests. In 2014, we launched introductory and intermediate Design Camps for rising middle school students, and high school underclassmen this year. Whether considering becoming a designer someday, or just looking for a creative, fun, and hands-on way to strengthen your thinking and ability to solve problems, Design Camp is a great place for you to be this summer.
