Digital Fabrication Studio and MakerSpace Policies

3D Printing Policies

  • All items created must be for professional or academic purposes within the College of Design.
  • Faculty and Staff reserve the right to decline any print request for any reason.
  • Those utilizing the College of Design’s 3D printers must do so for lawful purposes. Users must abide by all applicable laws and policies as stated below, while respecting the health and safety of the University community.
  • The College of Design cannot guarantee model quality or stability, confidentiality of designs, or specific delivery times. Please plan appropriately and allow adequate time for your print requests based according to your design sprints and/or studio deadlines; this may also include post-processing cleaning, prep and/or painting.
  • 3D printed models are primarily for prototype and fabrication for form/function and should not be considered safe for real world applications that might include extreme conditions that might include weight, force, pressure, heat, exterior use as well as prolong exposure to the elements.
  • Personal projects should be printed at DH Hill’s Makerspace.

No Commercial Work Permitted

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD EITHER THE LEAZAR NOR THE LAMPE LASER CUTTERS BE USED IN SUPPORT OF COMMERCIAL WORK (FOR PROFIT). USE OF SCHOOL RESOURCES FOR COMMERCIAL/FOR PROFIT PURPOSES WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF SHOP PRIVILEGES!

Weapon Making is Banned

No weapons or parts of weapons can be printed under any circumstances. The NC State Campus/Workplace Violence Prevention and Management defines a weapon as any object that may be used to intimidate, attack, or injure another person or to damage property – N.C. Gen. Stat. §14-269.2. Objects understood to have a primary function as a weapon are not allowed on campus unless expressly authorized. The production of weapons, facsimiles of weapons or replicas of weapons is prohibited in the College of Design Digital Fabrication Studio and MakerSpace. This includes parts of weapons, ammunition, and defensive as well as offensive weapons. Personal projects that may include COSPLAY accessories, weapon affiliated toy designs, Nerf/Paintball accessories should be printed at the DH Hill’s Makerspace. Consult your faculty or department head if there are related research projects that may be aligned with a grant supported project, industry supported project and/or outreach/extension community engagement that would seem to conflict with this policy.

Notice Warning Concerning Copyright and Other Legal Restrictions

Copyright law under Title 17 of the United States Code, patent law under Title 35 of the United States Code, and other intellectual property laws of the United States may govern the making of photocopies or other reproductions of content. Under 17 U.S.C. § 108(f)(2) the provision of unsupervised photocopy or reproducing equipment for use by patrons does not excuse the person who uses the reproduction equipment from liability for copyright infringement for any such act, or for any later use of such copy or phonorecord, if it exceeds fair use as provided by 17 U.S.C. § 107. Nor does it excuse the person who uses the reproducing equipment from liability for patent, tort or other laws.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to make available or provide access to photocopy or other reproducing equipment if, in its judgment, use of such equipment would involve violation of copyright, patent or other laws.
