As part of the fall 2023 commencement ceremony, Dean Mark Hoversten recognized an exceptional student for their performance in the classroom and service to the college with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding College Citizenship and Academic Excellence, known as the Wings on Wings award.

This year’s recipient was Shabnam Mohammadzadeh, a Master of Landscape Architecture graduate. Dean Hoversten presented her with a medallion representing the angel Michael astride the mythical Greek creature Pegasus. This mixing of symbols reminds us that the opportunity represented by Pegasus must be matched by the responsible behavior of Michael.

Students for the Wings on Wings award are nominated by faculty in their departments. Mohammadzadeh was nominated by the Department Head for Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning María Bellalta.

“I have only known Shabnam for a brief period of time. That said, I have witnessed Shabnam’s commitment to the purpose and universality of design that benefits all members of society,” she says.

Mohammadzadeh has worked consistently and arduously to complete her degree, taking a full load of classes, holding a job to support herself, and working at the Natural Learning Initiative.

“She has triumphed over personal barriers, and has demonstrated her comprehensive understanding of the landscape architecture discipline on an urban and regional scale,” Bellalta continues.

Her open exam prioritized active transportation to improve human health, while highlighting the value and importance of considering social factors when creating design solutions for the built environment.

“My goals as a landscape architect are to create vibrant, innovative, and sustainable spaces that positively transform the quality of life in communities; prioritize community engagement in the design process; integrate nature within the built environment, and create innovative design solutions for urban environments which consider the environmental, social, and economic aspects with a holistic approach,” she says.
