The Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) received the prestigious Opal Mann Green Engagement and Scholarship Award. This award recognizes a team of individuals whose significant contributions and accomplishments have demonstrated excellence as engaged scholars who practice collaborative democratic strategies reflected in the Kellogg Commission Seven Part Test. The seven characteristics include responsiveness, respect for partners, academic neutrality, accessibility, integration, coordination and resource partnerships.

The recognition rewards authentic collaboration across university and community structures, highlighting programs that are both community-valued and mutually beneficial to partners.

The Natural Learning Initiative was honored at the Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony held on March 27.

Dana Gulling recognized with Outstanding Teacher Award

Dana Gulling

Dana Gulling, professor of architecture, was recognized with the Outstanding Teacher Award for 2025. Recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Award become members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers and become eligible for nomination for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award. 

Professor Gulling has been at the College of Design since 2012 and teaches courses including graduate and undergraduate design studios; lecture courses on building materials, architectural structures, building assemblies, and systems integration; and introduction to architectural drawing. Currently, Professor Gulling teaches an advanced, interdisciplinary studio with faculty from the NC State Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering that focuses on precast concrete.

NC State honored faculty for their commitment to educational excellence with the 2024-25 University Teaching Awards. Award recipients were recognized at a University Teaching Awards Luncheon and Ceremony on April 17.
