The Floating Grove: Inside NC State’s First Mass Timber Pavilion

Built in just eleven weeks, Floating Grove is NC State’s first mass timber pavilion designed and constructed by architecture students through the School of Architecture’s Design + Build program. From chainsaw-built jigs to cross-laminated timber experimentation, the project showcases how hands-on learning, collaboration and sustainable materials come together to create a space that now belongs to the campus community.

Rooted at NC State: Red Dot Design Award Winner Showcases Research-Design-Industry Partnership

What began as a classroom challenge to improve care for mothers and newborns has grown into an award-winning medical device. After studying how hospital design made it difficult for mothers recovering from cesarean birth to reach their infants, NC State industrial design students collaborated with UNC researchers and design firm Trig to create the Couplet Care Bassinet. Now used in hospitals across the U.S., the bassinet allows new mothers to safely connect with their babies — a powerful example of design improving everyday lives.
The Floating Grove, a wooden open-air structure with seating, is situated between Jordan Hall and Biltmore Hall at the College of Natural Resources, surrounded by trees and greenery.

Landscape Architects Commit to Zero Emissions and Biodiversity Increases by 2040

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and ASLA Fund announced today that it has released a new plan to address the climate and biodiversity crises together. The new Climate & Biodiversity Action Plan was developed by a high-profile Task Force of five landscape architects, chaired by Meg Calkins, FASLA, professor of landscape architecture and environmental planning at North Carolina State University. The task force worked with a 34-member Advisory Group of climate and biodiversity experts.

Industrial Design alumna Dipali Aphale (’17) is part of the IBM team recognized with Best AI Solution – Data Insights & Knowledge Management at the 2025 Banking Tech Awards USA. The winning project, IBM Synthetic Data Sets, uses artificial intelligence to generate realistic, privacy-protected data for safer innovation across industries.

Empty Pedestals Earns National Honors for Reframing Confederate Monuments

Empty Pedestals: Countering Confederate Narratives Through Public Design (LSU Press, 2024) has recently earned recognition at the national level for its ability to bring design and planning strategies to confront and transform spaces marked by endemic prejudice. The book received a 2025 Professional Award of Honor in Communications from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and was a finalist for the 2025 J.B. Jackson Book Prize from the University of Virginia (UVA) Center for Cultural Landscapes.
