3 NC State Community Members Honored at Sisterhood Dinner

Three NC State community members — a faculty member, a staff member and a student — received awards for their outstanding contributions to our university at the Sisterhood Dinner in February.

The dinner is an annual celebration of women at NC State and their achievements.

“It is always a good opportunity to showcase the amazing work of people of all genders across the university working for women’s advancement,” said Janine Kossen, director of the Women’s Center.

The Council on the Status of Women and the Women’s Center co-hosted the dinner at Talley Student Union. The theme for the dinner was “The Ripple Effect.” Instead of a keynote speaker, this year’s dinner featured four community storytellers who reflected on the theme and shared their own perspectives.

“I think for big events like this, people sometimes feel like they must have achieved gargantuan, momentous advances,” Kossen said. “It’s not about that. It’s about the small things that create momentum and help other people find their space.”

One of the community storytellers reflected on how a trip to the zoo with her grandmother helped her realize she could be a marine biologist.

“We wanted to focus on how people are opening doors for other people,” Kossen said.
