Concept Statement: For my Art2Wear 2020 collection, I took inspiration from action painter Jackson Pollock and silhouettes worn by 80s icons. I began with the goal of creating looks with a futuristic punk feel. In order to combat the fast fashion mentality, I have designed pieces with interchangeability in mind so that the garments can be switched around to create many different looks. I wanted to play with different, contrasting textures in my collection, so I combined the strength of denim with the lightness of tulle. I layered teal, pink, purple, and white paint splattered on the denim garments, bags, shoes, and earrings in my collection.

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

I took inspiration from action painter Jackson Pollock and silhouettes worn by 80s icons. I began with the goal of creating looks with a futuristic punk feel.

What were the main fabric or fabric manipulation processes you used in your garments?

In order to combat the fast fashion mentality, I have designed pieces with interchangeability in mind so that the garments can be switched around to create many different looks. What will you take away from your time working with Art2Wear?

I am grateful for the opportunity to create a collection, improve my skills in sewing and design, and receive mentorship and critiques from my professor, Precious Lovell, and my classmates.

How has Covid-19 affected your collection, if at all?

I was still able to complete my collection as planned, however, due to Covid-19 I was unable to use models to show my completed looks. Though it was strange having studio online, I was happy to have the extra time to spend with my family.

If you have already designed for Art2Wear, how has this year been different?

Although there was no fashion show this year, I was still very excited to participate in Art2Wear. Since completing last year’s collection, I have grown as a designer and learned new techniques.

I would like to thank my family for their support and encouragement always. I love you! I would also like to thank Precious Lovell for guiding me throughout my time here at NC State.
