It’s that time again when DesignIntelligence seeks feedback from professionals across the country to rate the Best Architecture + Landscape Architecture programs. We encourage you to participate in the DesignIntelligence survey. Although these rankings represent a condensed view of a school’s overall performance, they have shown to have a significant impact on increasing student enrollment and attracting institutional support with respect to funding and faculty positions.

The survey requires about 15-20 minutes of your time and can be completed in more than one sitting should you need to exit and return to complete it at a later time. Survey respondents must be in a leadership position qualified to hire employees.  Individual responses will be kept confidential but a listing of all responding firms may be published. Your valued input in this survey will enhance NC State College of Design as a program that is best preparing students for success in the design profession.

For Architects: A message from David Hill, AIA

It has been a great year for our students and faculty, and I want to share a few brief highlights with you:

• Students in the Airport Design Studio (ARC 503), led by Wayne Place and Curt Fentress exhibited their work at the 2018 Venice Biennale. The exhibition won the Architecture University Project Award, which is given to the top college exhibition by the European Cultural Centre (ECC).

• AIA Triangle announced the student winners of the 2019 Scholarship Program. Jessica Weiner (BEDA student), Austin Corriher (M.Arch student), and Amelia Murphy (M.Arch student) received Honor Awards for design in the 2019 AIA Triangle Scholarship Program. Merit Awards went to Hanna Smith (BEDA student), Jennifer Grieg (BEDA student), and Alex Buck (M.Arch student).
• Students in The Summer Design/Build Studio, led by Ellen Cassilly, Randall Lanou, and Erik Mehlman, completed a new outdoor classroom for habitat restoration on the Eno River in Durham.
• Fate Melek (M.Arch student), Matthew Bullard (BEDA student), and Caroline Cox (M.Arch student) won first, second, and third place respectively in The Shawcroft Prize: Hand Drawing Competition, which was coordinated by Patricia Morgado.
• Rosa McDonald (M.Arch student) received the $20,000 Gensler Diversity Scholarship.

• Timothy Yang (M.Arch student) won first prize in the Kamphoefner Honor Fellowship. Two others, Sarah Hefner (M.Arch student) and Ryan Cooper (M.Arch student), received Honorable Mention.
• Students in Tom Barrie’s ARC 503 studio designed micro-housing for homeless and disabled veterans. The studio was a partnership between the School of Architecture and The North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness.

• Students in Dana Gulling’s ARC 503 studio collaborated with Greg Lucier’s College of Engineering students to design and test innovative, full-scale pre-cast concrete panels. The studio was supported by a grant from the Precast Concrete Institute.

• The School of Architecture is now a STEM-designated program. This will give international students an extended timeframe and greater opportunities to work in U.S. Firms. Director of Graduate Programs, Dana Gulling, coordinated this effort.

• Patrick Rand received a Fulbright Distinguished Chair Award. He is teaching and conducting research at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland this spring.

• Patrick Rand won the Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence for NC State University. It is the most prestigious award given to faculty for teaching excellence.

• Tom Barrie was named ACSA Distinguished Professor as part of the 2019 Architecture Education Awards by Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

• Tom Barrie co-authored with Julio Bermudez (Catholic University) a chapter in the International Handbook of Spirituality in Society and the Professions (Routledge, 2019).
• George Elvin presented “Adventures in Coastal Ecological Literacy” at the Ocean Literacy Summit in Boston.

• Bryan Bell released Public Interest Design Education Guidebook: Curricula, Strategies, and SEED Academic Case Studies, the second in a series of Public Interest Design guidebooks.
• Dana Gulling presented Manufacturing Architecture: An Architect’s Guide to Custom Processes, Materials, and Applications at Facades+ AM Symposium in Charlotte.
• Margret Kentgens Craig curated the Bauhaus.Photo Exhibition in the College of Design Gallery. She also delivered the opening lecture at the opening.

• Bryan Bell presented “Social Equity in Design: Seeking SEED and LEED Integration” at Greenbuild International Conference + Expo | Human X Nature.
• Kristen Schaffer has contributed numerous entries in the Society of Architectural Historians Archipedia, which compiles descriptions and images of 100 of the most significant buildings from North Carolina.
• Soolyeon Cho is Conducting an ongoing research project (2018-2020) about the Development of Optimal Control Systems for Smart Envelope Package.
• Burak Erdim’s manuscript for his book, Landed Internationals: Planning Cultures, Academy, and Nationhood in the Cold War Frontier, was approved by the faculty board of the University of Texas.
• Traci Rose Rider was awarded a grant by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to create educational modules for students to learn about life-cycle of green buildings and sustainable materials.
• Sara Queen was selected as a 2018-19 University Faculty Scholar. She is one of 20 faculty members who received this honor that recognizes significant academic achievements and contributions to NC State through teaching, research and community engagement.
• Burak Erdim organized a symposium to celebrate Eduardo Catalano’s profound design legacy—a legacy that continues to impact the College of Design.

• George Elvin authored Exploring Resilient Design in Extreme Environments in the Proceedings of the AIGA Design Educators Community Conference.
• Robin Abrams is completing historic property restorations on a 1721 townhouse in the Greenwich World Heritage Site and a Georgian house and garden Snowdonia National Park.
• George Elvin has joined the editorial board of Frontiers Research of Architecture and Engineering and served as a judge for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Sustainability Awards.
• Jianxin Hu and Wayne Place received SOM Foundation Research Prize and the NC State Univeristy Research and Innovation Seed Funding grant (with Traci Rider). Funds will suppor the team’s design and construction of a full-scale rotating testing facility for building components.
• Bryan Bell co-organized Structures for Inclusion 18, hosted by National University of Singapore and Design Corps in Singapore.

• Traci Rider is completing work on a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation exploring multi-family developer perspectives on integrating health strategies into their communities.
• Burak Erdim wrote “Academy and Landscapes of Development: Land Planning and Nation Building in the Cold War Middle East,” a chapter in Landscape and the Academy.
• Soolyeon Cho was elected as President-Elect for 2019-2020 and President for the 2020-2021 academic year in KSEA (Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association).
• David Hill and Andrew Fox (Landscape Architecture) were named 2018 Virginia Design Medalists for their work in the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab.

For Landscape Architects: A message from Meg Calkins, FASLA:

I want to share a few brief highlights with you from the past year:

• Faculty members Andy Fox, Kofi Boone, David Hill, Celen Pasalar, Tania Allen, Robby Layton, and Chuck Flink received a National ASLA Communications Award for Homeplace: Conversation Guides for Six Communities, Rebuilding After Hurricane Matthew.
• The Department of Landscape Architecture won the Sustainable Department/Organization at the NCSU Sustainability Awards. LAR is the first Department to ever win the award.
• Kofi Boone, ASLA and Andy Fox, ASLA were promoted to the rank of Professor based on their exemplary teaching, scholarship and community engagement work.
• NC State College of Design Dean, Mark Hoversten, FCELA, co-authored an article entitled “Discursive moments: Reframing deliberation and decision-making in alternative futures landscape ecological planning”. The article was published in Landscape and Urban Planning February 2019.
• Gene Bressler was appointed by Dean Hoversten to direct the College’s new Design Collaborative initiative.
• Gavin Smith, PhD, AICP joined the Department of Landscape Architecture faculty in January 2019. Smith is an internationally recognized leader in planning for coastal resilience as well as hazard mitigation (risk reduction), disaster recovery and adapting to climate change.
• Chuck Flink, FASLA, was awarded the Watauga Medal for his significant contributions to the university, the College of Design and the Department of Landscape Architecture. Flink has served on many boards at the university including the College of Design Leaders Council and the NCSU Board of Visitors.
• Celen Pasalar was awarded the Outstanding Extension Award from the NC State Office of Outreach and Engagement. Celen has led several successful extension projects involving students, faculty, communities and non-profits.
• The Department of Landscape Architecture just completed Design Sprint, a four day interdisciplinary charette focusing on creative solutions to mitigate and adapt to Climate Change. Kofi Boone and Celen Pasalar coordinated the event involving students and faculty from eight departments and three universities. Ignacio Bunster Ossa, Chair of the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Task Force on Climate Change and Ryan Hargrove of the University of Kentucky lectured and participated as visiting critics.
• The Landscape Architecture Department is completing development of two new graduate certificate programs. The Park Planning, Design and Asset Management (PPDAM) certificate will be offered by LAR and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. Core courses for the certificate will be offered online. The Disaster Resilience and Hazards Mitigation Certificate is being developed by Gavin Smith.
• Elen Deming, Director of the NCSU Doctor of Design Program and LAR Faculty, contributed a chapter entitled “Values and Transformative Learning” to the recently released Routledge Handbook of Teaching Landscape.
• Emily McCoy, Carla Delcambre, Jesse Turner and graduate student Anna Grace Fitzgerald were awarded a grant from the NC State Sustainability Fund to study green infrastructure performance of LAR Design + Build sites on campus.
• In early April, Kofi Boone served on the national ASLA Professional Awards jury in Washington DC.
• Robin Moore and Nilda Cosco will present at the World Conference for Forests and Public Health in Athens Greece, the Children and Nature Network Conference in Oakland, California and the Environmental Design Research Association Conference in Brooklyn, New York this summer.
• The Natural Learning Initiative recently released the Virtual Field Trip (VFT) demonstrating the power of design to address environmental equity by increasing physical diversity and engagement with the natural world in early childhood.
• Landscape Architecture Faculty Gavin Smith, Elen Deming, Carla Delcambre, Emily McCoy, Ben Monette, Travis Klondike and Jesse Turner will present in multiple sessions at the Southeast Regional ASLA Conference in early June.
• Kofi Boone authored two chapters in the book Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity, Island Press, edited by David de la Pena, Diane Jones Allen, Randolph Hester, et al.
• Kofi Boone, Andy Fox, and MLA students Lindsey Naylor and Virginia Fall co-authored a chapter on “Princeville” in The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Grounds for Democracy. Princeville, North Carolina was the first town in the United States incorporated by African Americans. The town, inhabiting a low-lying, flood-prone area beside the Tar River, was the only land made available to former slaves and is increasingly vulnerable to flooding.
• Professor Robin Moore and Research Associate Professor Nilda Cosco continue their work at the Natural Learning Initiative on a multi-year project funded by the USDA entitled “Outdoor Learning Environments as Active Food Systems: Effectiveness of the Preventing Obesity by Design Gardening Component”.
• Andy Fox continues to lead the trans-disciplinary research and community planning of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab (CDDL). Recent work and publications were done for the North Carolina communities of Princeville, Brunswick, Beaufort, Lumberton and currently Elizabeth City.
• Assistant Professor of Practice, Emily McCoy authored a Landscape Architecture Information Series (LATIS) publication entitled A Landscape Performance and Metrics Primer for Landscape Architects: Measuring Landscape Performance on the Ground. The publication was released in December 2018.
