Michael S. Cole, Sr., FASLA, RLA
Michael Cole co-founded ColeJenest & Stone in 1988 and provides business development and start-up project design and planning. He has 40 years of experience across the southeast and is well connected with influential business, institutional and community leaders. His project work focuses primarily on the public sector, including the design of college and university campuses, healthcare and medical facilities, civic and streetscapes, master planning, utilities, and infrastructure. He has also designed several noteworthy commercial/mixed-use developments and athletic facilities including Piedmont Town Center near SouthPark and the UNCC Irwin Belk Track Complex.
Michael has extensive academic master planning experience with work on more than 60 college and university campuses in Virginia and North and South Carolina. His award-winning projects include the UNCC Master Plan, the UNC-Chapel Hill Historic Preservation Landscape Master Plan and Spectrum Arena in Charlotte. He is a former Charlotte and Raleigh Chamber Board member and co-chaired the City of Raleigh 2030 Comprehensive Plan Committee. He also served on an influential committee to evaluate the 2014 Uniform Development Ordinance for the City of Raleigh. He was an NC State University College of Design – Design Life Board member from 1982 to 2016, serving as president from 2007-2008. He now serves on the NCSU College of Design Leaders Council.
He is personally engaged in a variety of high-profile projects and leads workshops and vision sessions for public and private work, including the 2016 Appalachian State University Master Plan, the 2016 CPCC Master Plan and the 2019 UNCA Master Plan. Michael is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and fifth-generation Raleigh native. He and his wife Beverly live on her family farm which was established in 1832.
