The awards were announced during the American Library Association\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALA<\/a>) LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, held Jan. 19\u201322 in Baltimore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coretta Scott King Book Awards encourage the artistic expression of the African American experience via literature and the graphic arts; promote an understanding and appreciation of the black culture and experience; and commemorate the life and legacy of Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination in supporting the work of her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for peace and world brotherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dare_BookCover.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of An American Story.\" class=\"wp-image-32910\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The cover of An American Story.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cAn American Story,\u201d published by Little, Brown and Co., a division of Hachette Book Group, Inc., stunning mixed-media illustrations take the reader on a journey from the fireside tales in an African village, through the unspeakable passage across the Atlantic, to the backbreaking work in the fields of the South. This is a story of a people\u2019s struggle and strength, horror and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dare_Page_ChinUp-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"Four pages from An American Story. For the second half of her life, she has lived in and around Raleigh, North Carolina, where the bulk of her public artwork has been created. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor\u2019s in Art + Design, but considers herself a graduate of Meredith College\u2019s art program, as well. Dare Coulter has worked to create a career that focuses around heart-felt presentations of the human experience, life, joy and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCoulter masterfully uses mixed-media, illustrations and clay figures, to differentiate for the reader the story of slavery and present-day reactions of the kids who are learning about this history from their teacher in the narrative.
