Also, when viewed from certain vantage points, the trellis looks like butterfly wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/psi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2026\/07\/BK1_7310-1-1024x586.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83020\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The installation&#8217;s name is intended as a double or triple entendre, says Audrey Barnes, reflecting its visual resemblance to butterfly wings as well as garden\u2019s ability to attract pollinators and spark ripples of curiosity over what occurs in the nearby Plant Sciences Building. PSI and the Phytotron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Phytotron staff grew the plant material from seeds. Today, the trellis supports a variety of species that reflect research taking place in the building as well as other plants native to North Carolina that attract pollinators, including butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors can observe &#8220;Three Sisters&#8221; plantings \u2014 an indigenous agricultural pairing of corn, beans and squash \u2014 alongside novel sweetpotato varieties and sensory plants like basil and cilantro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We wanted to create an immersive or experiential way to engage them,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/people\/jsbarne3\/\">James Barnes <\/a>explains, noting the design specifically caters to visiting schoolchildren who can run through the structure as a tunnel, touching and smelling the plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Value of Bridge Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collaborative approach the designers took to achieve their goals was in keeping with the N.C. PSI\u2019s aim \u2014 to encourage and support interdisciplinary teams in research that addresses\u00a0some of the most complex challenges affecting agriculture and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As N.C. PSI Executive Director <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/psi\/people\/apercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adrian Percy<\/a> notes, NC State students and faculty have demonstrated a strong appetite for bridging the arts and sciences both at work and play.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt helps with creativity and innovation,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, the need for arts-and-sciences collaboration is apparent in the day-to-day work of the initiative, with engineers, computer scientists, biologists, agronomists and other scholars conducting research and working together to develop both physical and digital tools that work for farmers and researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making agricultural tools and technology user-friendly and seamlessly adaptable requires design expertise, Percy explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important that we get more College of Design faculty members with this sort of expertise engaged in our work,\u201d Percy adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James, an assistant research professor in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/landscape-architecture\/resources\/explore\/\">Department of Landscape Architecture + Environmental Planning<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalearning.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural Learning Initiative<\/a>, says the collaborative approach ensured the installation met the practical needs of the site while maintaining its aesthetic integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phytotron Research Associate Mike Beddoe agrees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Beddoe explains, the Plant Sciences Building\u2019s test beds were designed to display plants tied to agriculture and related research in North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were excited about contributing to a novel design for a test bed, and without the collaboration between us and the College of Design on project timelines, target dates for plant maturities, as well as the choice of species able to withstand the full-sun environment in the front of the building, the project might not have succeeded,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Intentions to Share More Widely and Collaborate More Deeply<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beddoe is hopeful that he\u2019ll have the opportunity to collaborate with the College of Design again, applying lessons learned, he says, \u201cto build an even more exquisite art-focused exhibit that shows off native species and agricultural plants that are grown right here in North Carolina.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Barneses, too, are excited about the partnerships they\u2019ve built and the fact that the installation has been successful in attracting attention and questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation won\u2019t stay at the Plant Sciences Building long, they say.
