{"id":23883,"date":"2021-07-09T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/graphic-design\/2021\/07\/09\/alums-win-gdusa-health-design-award\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T19:50:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T23:50:46","slug":"alums-win-gdusa-health-design-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/graphic-design\/2021\/07\/09\/alums-win-gdusa-health-design-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Alums Win GDUSA Health + Design Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A collaboration between the College of Design and the <a href=\"https:\/\/advanced-hindsight.com\/\">Duke University Center for Advanced Hindsight<\/a> (CAH) recently brought home one of the coveted 2021 GDUSA Health + Wellness Awards\u2122 for their work promoting COVID-19 vaccination in rural North Carolina counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COVID-19 Vaccines: Inside the Process\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9BIH7YJn8Jc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building the Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team was comprised of faculty, students and alumni from the departments of graphic design and industrial design, as well as 12 behavioral scientists from CAH with the mission of improving vaccination rates in Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Haywood and Union counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of six months, the team developed a research strategy which included the input of 1,896 residents, health workers and government officials to identify attitudes, knowledge and myths surrounding vaccinations. <\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-blockquote\"><p>&#8220;Gaston County has benefited greatly from its inclusion in the CAH COVID Counties project. We have learned and shared best practices with our peer counties, benefited from the expertise of Duke and NC State Universities, and shared that learned experience to help shape Gaston County&#8217;s communication and response to a serious and life-altering public health crisis.&#8221;<\/p><p>&#8211; Justin Amos, Budget and Evaluation Manager, Gaston County<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n<p>A total of three videos were created as part of the campaign, each of them with English and Spanish language iterations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each with a unique theme, the videos were designed to address specific concerns within the five counties such as political interference with vaccine development, the speed of vaccine development and worries about vaccine safety.
