Ideal Space is an installation exhibit consisting of products that viewers can interact within a tactile and thoughtful way. The whole exhibit and its contents are designed, built, promoted, and curated by a small group of NCSU College of Design students.

The theme of the installation is “Home”, so each designer/ group of designers will be able to interpret this differently within their space. Overall this show is a way for us as young designers to step out of our academic curriculum and explore more interactive ideas of design. As students, it’s hard to share our work outside of class so having an event like this would serve as an amazing opportunity, as well as the chance to connect different groups within the local North Carolina design community.

The inspiration for this show comes from James Irvine, and the many designers he collaborated with during the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s all over Italy. It was a time when design and collaboration flourished, everything from tapestries, electronics, ceramics, furniture, to utensils were being re-evaluated. Designers came together to push the envelope of new ideas and people as well as brands were influenced by it. There were different ideas about what design was and how it should be performed, but these differences gave the field new perspectives.

The goal of this show is to tap into those different perspectives and personal beliefs of design and give students a chance to express it in a supportive environment. As designers, we believe that the products surrounding us tell a story and that there is a constant dialogue taking place. Because of this, we want to emphasize the interactive aspect of the exhibit by including the audience as much as possible. In addition to helping students reach a larger audience, this show is an opportunity to connect the dots within the local design community here in North Carolina.

Starting with students and spreading to friends, faculty and staff, local businesses, and events here in North Carolina, Ideal Space is a way to bring all of these communities together under one roof to experience design.

Ideal Space will be on exhibition at the NCMA  January 6th-25th
