Dean’s Wings on Wings Award

Each spring, the College of Design recognizes one student for their performance in the classroom and service to the College with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding College Citizenship and Academic Excellence.

Amira Slocum

Amira’s commitment to fostering a more inviting and shared environment within the design disciplines is notable. Her passion for landscape architecture is deeply personal, inspired in part by her experience surviving Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and witnessing the impacts of displacement due to climate change. This lived experience fuels her academic pursuits and her commitment to creating more resilient communities for everyone, through design.

Driven by concern for the experiences of her colleagues and peers, Amira (in collaboration with Melissa Dominguez) conducted a first-of-its-kind student research on the experiences of students in landscape architecture across the country.

The study was featured at the 2023 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture, where she presented her research alongside Melissa Dominguez and Professor Kofi Boone in a panel presentation focused on the challenges and opportunities experienced by BIPOC students in design education.

Amira is an inspiring student and a role model for the College of Design.
