{"id":25405,"date":"2021-02-18T16:26:47","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T16:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/architecture\/2021\/02\/18\/winning-design-selected-for-solarspace\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T23:54:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T03:54:40","slug":"winning-design-selected-for-solarspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/design.ncsu.edu\/architecture\/2021\/02\/18\/winning-design-selected-for-solarspace\/","title":{"rendered":"Winning Design Selected for SolarSpace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The following article is written by the NC State Stewards.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.ncsu.edu\/get-involved\/nc-state-stewards\/\">NC State Stewards<\/a> have planned the SolarSpace at Gardner Arboretum with one goal in mind \u2013 to be a space built by students, for students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new solar-powered outdoor space is now one step closer to completion with a winner selected in the student competition to design the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/solarspacedesigncompetition\/home\">SolarSpace Design Competition<\/a>, held over the extended winter break, challenged students to help shape NC State\u2019s sustainable future through reimagining the existing Gardner Arboretum trellis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis renewed trellis will provide learning opportunities on renewable energy, help attract and retain future students, and uphold the campus drive for sustainability,\u201d said NC State Steward Emily Applegate, who is majoring in Electrical Engineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design competition resulted in a pool of innovative concepts from students within the College of Design. The panel of judges \u2013 composed of Facilities Division staff, students and professional architects&nbsp; \u2013 selected the winning design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ph.D. student Dong-Jae Yi designed the winning concept, called <em>Sol-Arbor<\/em>. The design embraced the \u201cred brick\u201d tradition of NC State.
