Architecture Students Compete in Sigmon Memorial Scholarship Design Competition

The student team of Grace Polo-Wood, Ben Stradling, Myiam Nestor, and Taylor Ligon have won the Annual NCMCA Sigmon Memorial Scholarship Design Competition at North Carolina State University. The 2020 competition marks its twentieth year at NC State, sponsored by the North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association (NCMA).

The competition required the team to design and model a hypothetical masonry office building. The competition is part of Professor J. Patrick Rand’s “Architectural Construction Systems” class at NC State University’s College of Design and is a graded class assignment.

Ten teams participated in the “virtual” competition, and projects were judged by NCMCA Past President Doug Burton and by architect and teacher Frank Harmon.

Winning Teams

First Place Team

First place went to students Grace Polo-Wood, Ben Stradling, Myiam Nestor, and Taylor Ligon. The students will share funds towards a semester of in-state tuition.

Second Place Team

Second place went to the team of Micah Holdsworth, Meg Maley, Selya Furukawa, and Ryan Fluharty. Each student will receive a 4′ Crick level.

Third Place Team

Third place went to the team of Drew Dunphy, Brooklyn Scotto, Lauren Waterman, and Grace Riley. Each student will receive a Rose mason’s trowel.

Fourth Place Team

Fourth place went to the team of Barbara Espitia Toledo, Trent Baker, and Rushabh Patel. Each student will receive a 6′ mason’s rule.
