The focus will be three coastal plain communities that have sustained severe damage and loss of life resulting from ravaging hurricanes, the most recent of which was Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. These communities are: Greenville, Kinston, and Windsor, North Carolina.

The Opening Public Forum will frame the scope and magnitude of the issues and set the tone for inquiry and design. The Forum panelists include:

Gavin Smith, Ph.D., AICP, Research Professor and Director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence at the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of City and Regional Planning
Chuck Flink, FASLA, PLA, Greenways, Inc. and Executive in Residence at NC State University
Kofi Boone, ASLA, University Faculty Scholar and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture
Dan Howe, FASLA, AICP, Assistant Professor of the Practice and Forum Moderator
Each of the panelists will deliver a brief statement about their background related to flood, disaster, and/or community recovery, then respond to questions posed by the moderator, students, and others in the audience. This is part of DesignWeek.
